CSU Bakersfield Among Top Universities For Upward Mobility of Students

California State University, Bakersfield is one of the top universities in the nation for the upward mobility of its students, according to a new study that examines the “mobility rate” of every university and college in America.

According to the study by The Equality of Opportunity Project, 81 percent of CSUB students who enrolled in the late 1990s moved from the bottom fifth of the income distribution to the top three-fifths.  Only New Jersey Institute of Technology (85 percent) and Pace University (82 percent) ranked above CSU Bakersfield in that category.

“This study speaks to the value of a degree from CSUB, the difference the University makes in transforming our students’ lives, and is a testament to the commitment of our faculty, staff and administrators to student success,” said President Horace Mitchell.  “The upward mobility of our graduates is particularly important because a majority of our students stay in our region to live, work and contribute to our communities.  Our University and our graduates are key drivers of economic development in our region.”

Researchers compared the incomes of college graduates in their 30s from low-income families with that of their parents. The study’s authors included researchers from UC Berkeley, Stanford and Brown University.  The research is based on millions of anonymous tax filings and tuition records from the federal government from 1999 to 2013.
