CSUB Welcomes New Director of Public Affairs and Communications

California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is proud to welcome Michael J. Lukens as the Director of Public Affairs and Communications, effective January 3, 2017. Most recently, Lukens served as the communications consultant for the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Fresno (CSUF), where he worked on a wide range of internal and external events including projects in coordination with the CSU Chancellor’s Office.

“This is an exciting opportunity to share the stories of CSU Bakersfield students, faculty, staff, and alumni as they work to make a difference and improve the quality of life for residents throughout Kern County and the San Joaquin Valley,” said Lukens.

Lukens brings more than 27 years of experience in government relations at the federal, state, and local levels. He is the creator and editor of The Maddy Daily, a seven-day-a-week newsletter, which has tracked the local, regional, statewide, and national news regarding public policy and politics impacting the San Joaquin Valley region, since 2009. Previously, Lukens served for five years as press secretary for Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, where he was responsible for planning, coordinating and managing the overall communications efforts and day-to-day media relations for the Office of the Mayor, Office of the City Manager, and City of Fresno. At the state government level, Lukens worked for 16 years serving four Pennsylvania governors as deputy press secretary in the Governor’s Press Office, Governor’s liaison to the Governor’s Office of Legislative Affairs, and provided strategic direction to communications efforts in a wide variety of agencies.

As Director of Public Affairs and Communications, Lukens will be the chief publicist and public information officer for CSUB. The role consists of managing media relations for the University, developing and executing a communications strategy that will share and manage CSUB’s image, building awareness of the University, and managing government relations. Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, Lukens will work with internal campus constituents to align the University’s vision and strategic plan with an overall marketing plan.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Michael to the University Advancement team. He brings a wealth of experience to his new role at CSUB, where he will lead the Office of Public Affairs and Communications,” said Victor Martin, Vice President for University Advancement and Executive Director for the CSUB Foundation.

Lukens earned a master’s degree in public administration from California State University, Fresno and a bachelor’s degree in public policy from Pennsylvania State University.
