CSUB Teacher Education Department to Host IDEA Lab School Family Open House

The School of Social Sciences and Education, Teacher Education Department is hosting an Innovation, Design and Engineering in Action (IDEA) Lab School Family Open House on Saturday, December 10 from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) Education building.

Starting the Fall 2016, CSUB’s Teacher Education Department partnered with the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) to develop the Kern County Urban Teacher Residency Program (KUTR). The newly created Residency Program helps produce experienced and STEM- knowledgeable educators who are ready for hire after completing the one-year program.

As part of the curriculum, 19 Residents spend three days a week as co-instructors in elementary and secondary schools and also teach at CSUB’s own IDEA Lab School. Residents work with other educators in Professional Learning Communities to develop and implement STEM- centered lessons, which increases their content knowledge and experience, while providing skills that will improve the academic performance of students. “The Residents have grown so much. I can’t wait to see what they do next semester,” said Dr. Evans-Santiago, CSUB Assistant Professor.

Every Saturday during the course of the 10-week program BCSD transports thirty of their fifth grade students to CSUB for classes in the IDEA Lab School. Families of participating students will be able to view the IDEA Lab School and their child’s projects during the Family Day Open House on Saturday, December 10. Attendees will also have an opportunity to tour the CSUB campus.

The IDEA Lab School Family Open House will conclude the Residency Program for the Fall Semester and will occur again in Spring 2017 with the same students in attendance.
