CSUB's Kern Rural Teacher Residency Wins Beautiful Bakersfield Award

Each year, the Great Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce recognizes individuals and organizations in our Kern County community at the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards gala dinner. This year’s ceremony was held on Saturday, June 4. More than 100 nominations were received in 16 categories. California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) received three nominations: Kern Rural Teacher Residency (Education); Office of Events (Public/Private Partnership); and Campus Gamers (Life as it Should Be – Civic/Non-Profit). The Kern Rural Teacher Residency won the 2016 Beautiful Bakersfield Award for Education.

The Kern Rural Teacher Residency credential and master’s program addresses the need to prepare and increase the retention rate of qualified educators in high-need rural schools of minority and English learner populations. The program reaches out to rural schools through a partnership between CSUB’s School of Social Sciences and Education and three Central Valley California districts: Buttonwillow Union School District; Lamont Elementary School District; and Semitropic Elementary School District.

This program will help develop more than 100 teachers with specialized knowledge, skills, and a passion for teaching in rural, high-need settings.
