Walter Presents - Stafford Betty, Professor of Religious Studies, CSUB Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies

Imagine everyone in your world practiced a different religion from the one you practiced and spoke a different language. That’s what it was like for the Apostle Thomas (“Doubting Thomas”) when he arrived in India in the first century to convert Hindus and Buddhists to Christianity. Dr. Betty’s well-researched historical novel, The Severed Breast, tells that extraordinary story.

Dr. Stafford Betty will be giving a scholar lecture on Thursday, May 19 at 3:30 p.m. in the Dezember Reading of the Walter Stiern Library of California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB).

“The Severed Breast” is a revision of Thomas, published earlier by Penguin Books India but not released outside India. The UK publisher White Crow Books has now made it available in the West.

Dr. Betty earned his Ph.D. at Fordham University, is a Vietnam veteran, and came to CSUB as a religious studies professor shortly after the university was founded. Dr. Betty is a nationally prominent expert on afterlife research and sponsors the annual Betty Creative Writing Awards to honor the creative work of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels at CSUB.
