CSUB Alumnus Selected as James Madison Fellow

California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) alumnus Tyrel Rose has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation, an independent agency of the Executive Branch established by Congress in 1986 for the purpose of improving teaching about the United States Constitution in secondary schools. Each year, the James Madison Fellowship recognizes one social studies teacher from each state. The Fellowship includes up to $24,000 to pursue a master’s degree in history or political science for individuals who seek to become a secondary level history, government and social studies teachers with the opportunity to focus on the U.S. Constitution. Rose will attend the Madison Institute at Georgetown University where he and the other fellows from around the country will spend a month studying the Constitution.

Rose is a teacher at Foothill High School. He graduated from CSUB in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in history and a teaching credential. Rose credits his CSUB professors for helping and inspiring him throughout his academic career. He gave special thanks to Professor James Meriwether for igniting his passion for history. He also expressed gratitude toward Dr. Miriam Raub Vivian for being his advisor and mentor for Phi Alpha Theta, the International Honor Society for Students and Professors of History; as well as assisting him in class selection and graciously writing him letters of recommendation at various points throughout his career. Rose also acknowledged Professor Jeanne Harrie who challenged him academically. More specifically, Harrie’s senior seminar class allowed him to become a well-developed writer. For Rose, CSUB offered him a quality education that included courses in photography and ecology where he met his wife.

“I can truly say I would not be the person I am today if it were not for CSUB and the influences of all my professors.” Tyrel Rose said.
