CSUB and Chevron REVS UP Bakersfield

California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) and Chevron invite the media to attend the opening reception of the seventh annual Research Experience Vitalizing Science - University Program (REVS-UP) from 4-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27th, in the Walter Stern Library Dezember Reading Room.

Designed to boost interest in science and mathematics careers by offering research experiences, the REVS UP program is a CSUB staple. Previous participants have built robots, analyzed Valley fever outbreaks and conducted research on molecules with anti-cancer properties. One hundred high school students and 25 incoming CSUB freshmen will spend one month together collaborating in this exciting research program.

Students will receive five units of college-level science credit for their participation. In addition to the high school students of REVS UP, Chevron is also sponsoring a pilot program for middle school students. REVS PUP is a one-week, hands-on STEM experience in the Fab Lab at CSUB, a digital fabrication and rapid prototyping workshop.

“CSUB and Chevron have both benefitted from a longstanding partnership to support STEM learning,” said Dr. Kathleen Knutzen, CSUB’s interim Vice President of Academic Affairs. “With Chevron’s support, CSUB has created pipelines to STEM programs through outreach to high schools and middle schools in Kern County. In response to the projected growth of science and engineering jobs in the workforce, CSUB has developed engineering programs to create career pathways to these industries. Progress is being made because of the strong collaboration we have with industry leaders such as Chevron.”

REVS UP and REVS PUP were made possible by funding from Chevron as part of Chevron’s US STEM initiative. To learn more about Chevron and education, visit: http://www.chevron.com/countries/usa/inthecommunity/.

The event is by invitation only. Media are asked to park in Lot L.
