CSU Bakersfield to Welcome New Provost
May 04, 2015
Dr. Jenny Zorn will join CSU Bakersfield on July 31, 2015 as provost and vice president for academic affairs, succeeding Dr. Soraya Coley, who was named president of Cal Poly Pomona last fall. As the chief academic officer, Dr. Zorn will oversee the academic enterprise of the University, including the four schools, Extended University, Antelope Valley Center, and academic support services such as enrollment management, grants, research, and faculty affairs. Zorn currently serves as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Humboldt State University, prior to which she was the associate provost for academic and international programs at CSU San Bernardino.
“CSU Bakersfield is attractive to me because of its mission to build excellent academic programs for students, focus on diversity and inclusion, champion student success, and serve its internal and external communities,” Zorn said. “I am a first-generation college student and understand the challenges at CSU Bakersfield where college-going rates in the region are low and high numbers of students are first in their families to attend college. That is where my passion lies – in serving those students and making a real difference in the region, working extensively with the local community colleges and K-12 educational leaders to improve both the college-going and student success rates in the county.”
Zorn’s 26-year career within the CSU system includes serving as associate provost for academic programs, associate and assistant dean in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and professor of geography at CSU San Bernardino.
CSUB President Horace Mitchell lauded her administrative experience. “Jenny brings extensive experience in strategic planning, academic affairs, and student support. She has an impressive record of research and publications in the field of geography. Her commitment to teaching and learning, student success, diversity and inclusion, and community engagement aligns well with our vision and values. I look forward to her joining the University’s leadership team,” he said.
Zorn will report directly to the president and will serve as a member of the president’s cabinet. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, and a master’s and Ph.D. in geography from The Ohio State University.
