CSUB Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund to award 50 students

The CSUB Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund (HESF) will recognize 50 academically deserving students with scholarships totaling more than $100,000 at the 31st Annual Scholarship Awards Program on Saturday, Sept. 20th at 7pm in the CSUB Doré Theatre. A social hour begins at 6:30pm. Tickets are $20.

“This is a wonderful program that for thirty years has recognized academically excellent and economically deserving students coming to CSUB from throughout the region,” said Dr. Thomas Martínez, CSUB-HESF Coordinator and Professor of Public Administration at CSUB.  “Increasingly, CSUB-HESF graduates come to serve as local business, education and governmental leaders. They are outstanding representatives of CSUB and of our community.”

The HESF Awards Program special guest speaker will be David A. Torres, Attorney at Law.  Torres graduated from Gonzaga University School of Law and has been a member of the California Bar since 1988 and is currently a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. For over 20 years he has been a successful attorney at law in Kern County, focusing his practice on federal and state criminal defense. Torres has extensive experience in criminal defense, where he has tried over 146 felony jury trials to verdict. Torres is a Lieutenant Colonel for the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corp and has maintained an active role in veteran affairs as a civilian attorney. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Award, Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal.

Since its inception in 1984, HESF has helped build a tradition of excellence at CSUB by increasing access to a college education for academically excellent, underrepresented students who demonstrate leadership. The Fund has supported more than 1,500 outstanding students with scholarships totaling more than $2.8 million. Many of the students are among the first generation of their families to attend college.

The HESF Advisory Board is comprised of local business, education, and community leaders. Supporters of the 2014 HESF awards ceremony include Youth 2 Leaders, The Traynor Family, Chevron, Advanced Beverage, State Farm Insurance, Bright House Networks, and Univision KABE 39. Special thanks to Fifth District Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez who will be in attendance to welcome the community and congratulate the scholarship recipients.
