Scholarship recipients announced for the 2014 CSUB John Brock Endowment

Judith Tuttle McCarthySix outstanding California State University Bakersfield students in the school of Business and Public Administration are the recipients of the 2014 John Brock Endowment scholarships. The students will be presented with an award of $2,500 each during the annual John Brock Community Service Awards Dinner to be held on September 4, 2014 at Seven Oaks Country Club.  The event will also honor Judith Tuttle McCarthy, founding chair of the Women’s and Girls’ Fund of the Kern Community Foundation, as the 2014 recipient of this year’s award.

“The students who will receive these scholarships have demonstrated not only academic achievement, but also leadership and the community service for which the John Brock Endowment was established to embody,” said Dr. John Emery, Dean of the CSUB School of Business and Public Administration. “Their future success in private and public sectors will be of great importance to Bakersfield and Kern County.”

This year’s John Brock Endowment Scholarship recipients are:

Shawn Davis – Davis is a senior majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Supply Chain Logistics. He has already earned two Associate’s Degrees in General Business and Mathematics from Taft College. He is a member of the honors program at CSUB and has achieved Dean’s List every term that he has attended CSUB. He is currently in his 9th month of a one-year internship at Paramount Farms where he is working as a production analyst. He is the first in his family to attend college. After graduating at CSUB, Davis hopes to earn his Master’s Degree in Business with a concentration in Predictive Analytics.

Chris Dixon - Dixon is a senior majoring in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Supply Chain/Logistics. He is a first-generation college student who, after working for just over 7 years in the oil and gas industry, decided to return to school in an effort to both gain a competitive advantage in the workplace and at the same time convey the importance of education to his two young daughters. Upon commencement, Dixon plans to enroll in graduate school at CSUB and eventually obtain a logistics management position in the petroleum industry.

Koathar Hassan – Hassan is a senior majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance and Economics. She is a member of the International Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma, the National College Honor Society Alpha Chi, and serves as the treasurer for the Financial Management Association at CSUB. She grew up in a family that emphasizes academic excellence and says she has, and will always be, driven to achieve her educational goals. After graduating from CSUB, she plans to earn a Master’s Degree in Business and her ultimate goal is to run her own small business.

Stacy McCord – McCord is a senior majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.  She is a member of the CSUB Hawk Honors Program; Beta Gamma Sigma, the International Society for Collegiate Schools of Business; and Alpha Chi, the national all-university academic honor society.  She transferred to CSUB from Bakersfield College (BC), where she graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree in Business Administration. After completing her Bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue her CPA license and continue her education, working towards her Master’s degree, while working in the accounting industry.

Thomas Prothro - Prothro is a senior majoring in Business Administration. He is a member of the CSUB-AV Student Life Advancement Committee, which works to provide extracurricular activities for CSUB-AV students. Thomas also works on the CSUB-AV campus in the computer lab providing assistance to other students. Thomas is an adult learner who began his higher education at the age of 35 while working full time. After completing his Bachelor’s Degree, Thomas would like to work in local government and plans to go directly into the CSUB MBA program. Eventually, Thomas would like to return to CSUB to teach and mold the next generation of business leaders.

Cecilia Saldaña – Saldaña is a senior majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting.  She is a member of the CSUB Hawk Honors Program; Beta Gamma Sigma, the International Society for Collegiate Schools of Business; and Treasurer of the CSUB University Accounting Association, an organization that enables you the chance to network and pursue future career opportunities with other students with an accounting major.  She says she realizes that the value of an education is priceless and she will be the first to graduate college in her family. Saldaña’s plan is to ultimately become a Certified Public Accountant
