CSUB Presents the 38th annual Jazz Jam featuring composer James Miley

James MileyThe Music Department at California State University, Bakersfield is pleased to present the 38th Annual Jazz Jam featuring the CSUB Jazz Ensemble with guest artist/composer James Miley.  This concert takes place on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 8 PM in the Doré Theatre on the CSUB campus.

Miley is the Assistant Professor of Music at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, and an award-winning composer of music for jazz ensembles. He is the recipient of the prestigious IAJE/ASCAP Gil Evans Fellowship in Jazz Composition, and has been a featured composer at the International Jazz Composers Symposium in Tampa, FL. Miley made his Carnegie Hall debut as a composer with After the Water, the Clouds (2006), premiered by the James Logan Wind Symphony under the direction of Ramiro Barrera.  His work for large jazz ensembles has been commissioned by many of the top university and high school big bands in the nation, most recently for the California All-State Honor Jazz Band, the University of Texas at Arlington, the Las Vegas Academy and the Monterey Next Generation Festival.  He has appeared as a guest composer and director at numerous national and international festivals and universities over the past decade, including the Universities of Kansas, Michigan, Nevada, and Oregon, CSU Northridge, California Institute of the Arts, and the Kathmandu, Sundance (Nepal), Reno, San Joaquin, and Monterey Jazz Festivals. His catalog of compositions and arrangements is available through Walrus Music, Sierra Music and UNC Jazz Press.

“James is a decorated composer and performer, but beyond that, he is writing in a style that speaks to fans of good music - regardless of genre,” said Jim Scully, Director of the CSUB Jazz Ensemble.  “James creates arrangements and original works that combine many influences. The resulting eclecticism is something that speaks to me as an artist, and really relates to current students.  It just good music!”

The concert will feature Miley’s works as performed by CSUB students under the direction of Scully. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors (60+) and $5 for any student with a student ID.  Tickets can be purchased online via Brown Paper Tickets (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/458356) or at the door on the night of the event.

CSU Bakersfield Music again welcomes Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center as sponsoring partners.  The continuation of our guest artist programs would not be possible without their continue and generous support.
