FACT Free Open House to celebrate one-year anniversary of golden eagle enclosure
January 21, 2014
California State University, Bakersfield invites the community to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the golden eagle enclosure during a free Open House at the Facility for Animal Care and Treatment (FACT) in the CSUB Environmental Studies Area (ESA). Come see how eagle Holley has adapted to her new space on Saturday, February 1, from 1 pm-4 pm.
FACT is a wildlife rescue/conservation education project founded in 1975 by Ted Murphy, CSUB emeritus professor of biology. FACT students and volunteers care for hundreds of injured or orphaned birds of prey, conduct tours of the facility and offer classroom programs for thousands of Kern County school children each year. As a unique project of CSUB’s Biology Department, FACT is supported by an annual fundraising barbecue, members of Friends of FACT, and the sale of gift items at open houses held throughout the year.
During the open house, guided tours of FACT will feature talks and demonstrations with live birds of prey, including hawks, owls and a golden eagle. CSUB Biology students will also give visitors an opportunity to make a journal from recycled materials and participate in an interactive scavenger hunt. New this month, visitors can make a recycled bird feeder to hang in the trees at FACT or take home to feed their own back yard birds. Members of CSUB's 60+ Club will be on hand to sell nature gifts, T-shirts, note cards, coloring books, zoo-books, and other items.
The public is encouraged to visit the FACT webpage and discover more about the center as well as the items that are currently on the wish list. Wish list items will be collected during the open house. The wish list can be found at http://www.csub.edu/fact/registry.htm
To get to FACT, enter campus through the south entrance off Camino Media Boulevard (Roadrunner Drive). Turn right into Parking Lot I and, at the softball field backdrop, follow the dirt road over the bike path to the parking area. For more information, contact Marlene Hensley, FACT Program Coordinator at 661-654-3167 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
