CSUB incoming students to be welcomed during New Student Convocation and Family Weekend
September 13, 2013
Over 2,000 new students are expected to descend onto the California State University Bakersfield campus this fall quarter. Over 1,400 will be first time freshmen. CSUB officials will welcome them with a ceremony and celebration during the New Student Convocation and Family Weekend to be held on September 14th and 15th at CSUB.
The New Student Convocation is a formal ceremony for incoming new and transfer CSUB students and their families. Just as Commencement celebrates the completion of a student’s academic journey, Convocation commemorates its beginning. The ceremony creates an opportunity for student and parents to be officially recognized and welcomed into the CSUB community. During the New Student Convocation and Family Weekend, students will meet fellow students and faculty, as well as hear from CSUB President Dr. Horace Mitchell as he conveys the importance of students’ educational endeavors and CSUB’s commitment to support them in the achievement of their goals, both inside and outside the classroom.
Although the New Student Convocation has taken place for many years, this is only the third year that it will be held as a celebration weekend for the entire family.
The event recognizes parents of new students and the importance of their role in their children’s education. Roadrunner Parents Association Members in attendance will participate in a special pinning ceremony as recognition of their membership.
“This event is an opportunity for students to meet other students and for parents to connect with other parents,” said Imelda Simos-Valdez, Director of Southern San Joaquin Valley Cal-SOAP. “We’ve heard from many who have attended in the past that this event not only helped them build relationships with other students and parents, but also gave them the guidance to obtain the services they needed throughout the school year.”
The CSUB 2013-2014 school year will begin on Monday, September 16th, with a record-breaking enrollment of over 8,500 students. Students will be welcomed back to campus with various activities during the first week of school. For a complete list of events, see PDF document attached.
