CSUB Announces New Director of Development
June 13, 2013
The office of University Advancement welcomes Victor Martin as the new Director of Development for the CSUB Foundation. He began his new role on June 10, 2013.
In his new role, Martin will serve as a central fundraising leader where he will cultivate, solicit and steward major gift donors to California State University, Bakersfield, specifically in the schools of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering, and Arts and Humanities, as well as the Walter Stiern Library. Reporting to David Melendez, Vice President of University Advancement, Martin will work with deans, faculty and university administrators, to develop fundraising plans and strategies that can support programmatic and funding priorities that support student, faculty, and academic and community initiatives.
"Victor is an important addition to the University Advancement team,” said Melendez. “He will be focused on a particular portfolio of work and will be essential to the success of this office. His exemplary track record, both in this community and throughout his career, is rich with experience that will make the university a greater resource for the community."
Originally from Rockford, Illinois, Martin brings seven years of fundraising experience to CSUB. During that time, he has helped raise nearly $300 million for more than a dozen nonprofit organizations in Missouri, Illinois and California. Having moved to Bakersfield in the Fall of 2010, he has already made his mark in raising funds for other local organizations. In his most recent role, he served as Director of Development for the San Joaquin Community Hospital Foundation where he conducted a capital campaign that exceeded their $5 million goal.
Martin served as the Executive Director of CCS Fundraising for nearly five years, where he worked with a broad range of clients, including churches, schools, associations and membership organizations such as the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, and Lions Clubs International Foundation, where he served a key role in a $200 million campaign for blindness prevention and sight restoration programs. Throughout his fundraising career, Martin has worked with clients to set, meet and exceed campaign goals while increasing capacity to meet longer-term needs.
“I joined CSUB because I believe in the transformative power of education,” said Martin. “Education is an incredible gift and attending a university is one of the best ways we, as people, can enhance every aspect of our lives. I think we are in a perfect position to do great things here at CSUB through philanthropy. I'm excited to be working with the University Advancement team to enhance our programs, facilities and the overall quality of the student experience.”
Martin received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. In his spare time, he serves as a member of the American Cancer Society Gala Committee, Board President of the Montagna Homeowners’ Association, member of the Bakersfield Track Club, and lifetime member of the Hindu Temple of Kern County. He currently resides in Bakersfield with his wife Nima and his 21-month-old daughter, Maya. They are expecting a second child this summer.
