CSU Bakersfield set for 43rd commencement

California State University, Bakersfield will celebrate its 43rd annual commencement ceremonies on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday June 11, 14 and 15. CSUB Antelope Valley will hold a graduation reception on June 16. Roughly 2,175 undergraduate and graduate students will don their caps and gowns, to be recognized by the University during three ceremonies.
The commencement ceremonies are as follows:
Tuesday, June 11, 6 p.m. - Graduate Hooding, CSUB Icardo Center:
The hooding ceremony is for master's degree candidates during which a faculty member places the hood over the head of the graduate, signifying his or her success in completing the graduate program.
Commencement Speaker: Dr. Horace Mitchell, CSUB President
Dr. Mitchell became the fourth president of CSUB in July 2004 after 36 years of experience in higher education. Under Mitchell's leadership, the university has continued a period of rapid development, with a vision to extend the excellence and diversity of the faculty and academic programs, enhance the quality of the student experience and strengthen community engagement.
Friday, June 14, 7 a.m. - The Schools of Humanities, Business and Public Administration and Natural Sciences, CSUB Amphitheatre.
Commencement Speaker: Mr. Rick Wartzman, Executive Director of the The Drucker Institute
An accomplished author, publisher and public policy fellow, Mr. Rick Wartzman writes “The Drucker Difference” column for Forbes.com and works as the editor of The Drucker Lectures: Essential Lessons on Management, Society, and Economy (McGraw-Hill, 2010) and Drucker: A Life in Pictures (McGraw-Hill, 2013). Wartzman serves on the board of the National Human Services Assembly, the editorial board of Boom: A Journal of California, the board of Temple Israel of Hollywood and is a Fellow at the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities at USC.
Saturday, June 15, 7 a.m. - The School of Social Sciences and Education, CSUB Amphitheatre.
Commencement Speaker: Dr. Robert J. Arias, Superintendent of the Bakersfield City School District
Dr. Arias has more than 27 years of public school experience as a teacher, principal and administrator at five Los Angeles area school districts and finally the Bakersfield City School District, where he oversees the largest elementary school district in California serving more than 29,000 students, over 3,000 employees and a budget of one-quarter of a billion dollars annually.
Sunday, June 9, 3 p.m. – CSUB Antelope Valley Reception, CSUB-AV Campus in Lancaster.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Thomas Wallace, CSUB Vice President of Student Affairs
Dr. Wallace has served as Vice President of Student Affairs since February of 2012. He serves as a member of the President's Cabinet and is responsible for campus programs, services, and activities that support the university's educational mission. Wallace is a career educator, amassing 32 years of experience. Prior to becoming a professor of educational leadership and a student affairs administrator at the University of Mississippi where he served from 1990 to 2010, Wallace was a K-12 teacher and principal.
