CSUB celebrates its ‘Rite of Spring’ with its 27th Annual Jazz Festival
May 08, 2013
California State University Bakersfield is known for contributing culture, artistic value and talent to the Bakersfield community and this year’s annual Jazz Festival is no different. From Friday, May 10 to Saturday, May 11, the CSUB Amphitheatre will be alive with the melodies and rhythmic percussions of Jazz performers. Friday night’s show begins at 7:00 PM with the gates opening at 6:00 PM while Saturday night’s show begins at 2:00 PM with the gates opening at 1:00 PM. With over 10 different acts during the course of two days, the 27th annual Jazz Festival will be a weekend to remember for the entire Bakersfield community.
This year’s Jazz Festival will feature acts such as the gifted vibraphonist/vocalist Roy Ayers, blue-eyed soul singer Billy Vera and his Big Band, bilingual talents Avance, and CSUB Music Program alum and festival director Rob Hutchinson and his quartet. Accompanied with the grooves of the trumpets and scattin’ of the vocalists, will be the sale of a variety of foods, drinks including beer and wine as well as an artists pavilion and other vendors. A highlight of the event will be Saturday evening’s fireworks show. Proceeds from the event go towards CSUB student scholarships.
“The Bakersfield Jazz Festival has given over a half million dollars in scholarships to CSUB students in many academic areas and has created 9 endowed scholarship funds that will always be supporting others,” said Doug Davis, Director and organizer of the Bakersfield Jazz Festival. “But the most important gift of the festival is the connection of community and the celebration of a music big enough to include all of us.”
The vibrant party atmosphere partnered with the relaxing jazz sounds will make for an event for the whole family to enjoy. Festival attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs for lawn seating as well as coolers stocked with picnic items. However, outside alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
