CSUB Announces screening of “Miss Representation”

Rosie the RiveterCSUB’s ClubGEN (Gender Equality Now!) and the Women’s and Girls’ Fund, a leadership initiative of the Kern Community Foundation, will be screening the independent documentary film “Miss Representation” in the Student Union Multipurpose Room of CSUB on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 4:40 PM.  Immediately following the screening will be a panel discussion led by CSUB Faculty, including Judith Pratt (Communications), Kris Grappendorf (Physical Education and Kinesiology) and Debra Jackson (Philosophy). This event is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in Lot L.

“Miss Representation,” directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and aired on OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network. The film explores the process of how the media’s distortions of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence.

“This event is an exciting opportunity for CSUB and the community to learn about the relationship between media depictions of women and women’s continuing struggle for equality,” said Debra Jackson, chair of CSUB’s Women’s and Gender Studies program. “ We are especially pleased to partner with the Women’s and Girls’ Fund and the Kern Community Foundation for this program.”

This film was purchased and donated to the Walter Stiern Library by the Women’s and Girls’ Fund for use in courses dealing with gender and media issues.
