CSUB Announces New Public Affairs Coordinator
February 26, 2013
The CSUB Office of University Advancement welcomes Irma Cervantes to the Department of Public Affairs and Communications. She began her new role on February 25, 2013.
As Public Affairs Coordinator, Cervantes will work in the Public Affairs and Communications department, to promote the mission of CSU Bakersfield through the placement of news and information about the university. Reporting to Colleen Dillaway, Director of Public Affairs and Communications, she will work to support the Division of University Advancement and increase communications efforts through publicity, public relations and social media channels.
"We are very pleased to welcome Irma to the team," said Dillaway. "She comes to us not only as a seasoned communications professional with more than a decade of local media experience, she also is an alumna and a current student working towards a post-baccalaureate degree, this translates to an innate passion for CSUB. Irma's background and strengths make her a natural fit to help tell the university's story."
Cervantes brings 14 years of communications experience to CSUB. In her more recent role, she was well known in the community as a news reporter for Univision KABE 39, where she reported on stories from breaking news to human interest. She is an award-winning journalist, recognized with a Radio Television News Association Golden Mike Award and the prestigious Radio and Television News Directors Association Edward R. Murrow Award. She was also a recipient of a Kern Press Club award in 2012.
While at Univision, in addition to her reporting duties, Cervantes hosted a public affairs show titled "Kern County at Large," which aired on sister station, MyNetwork KUVI 45, where she featured many local nonprofit organizations. She implemented the Community Calendar program and was responsible for content and announcements for both the English and Spanish stations on-air and online. Prior to reporting, Cervantes worked as a Production Assistant at Univision where she wrote, shot, directed, and edited many commercials in both English and Spanish for local businesses.
Additionally, Cervantes is a member of the Radio and Television News Directors Association, the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Kern Press Club. In her spare time, she can be seen taking part in the organizing of many community nonprofit events, where she has often served as a mistress of ceremonies and motivational speaker. She enjoys public speaking at Kern County schools, where she shares the importance of education to future generations.
"I am thrilled to have been chosen to be the new Public Affairs Coordinator at CSUB," said Cervantes. "I am very proud to bring my many years of communications experience to a place that I care so much about."
Cervantes received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from CSUB, where she served as a staff writer and copy editor for The Runner newspaper. She is also currently a student in the CSUB Master of Public Administration program with an expected graduation date of June 2013. She was born and raised in Delano, California, and is Delano High School Graduate. She currently resides in Bakersfield with her husband, Adam Lancaster.
