CSU Bakersfield Announces Appointment of Director of Alumni Relations
February 06, 2013
Roopa Davé-Lakhani has been named the newly appointed Director of Alumni Relations at CSU Bakersfield. She will begin her new role on February 18.
Davé-Lakhani, a CSUB alumna, has been a key staff member at CSUB since 2006. Previously she served in the Division of Student Affairs as the Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities, a position she held beginning in 2010.
As a result of her work in Student Affairs, she has worked on projects that helped reorganize the office and brought together critical people, including students, staff, and faculty, to sustain student success. She has established numerous programs that support the goal to increase student awareness regarding academic integrity, civility, and ethical behavior. Under her leadership, the office established the first Ethics Awareness Week, which has since become an annual event. The week-long event is a collaborative effort among members of both the on- and off- campus community and serves as a model in the CSU system.
Additionally, Davé-Lakhani has been able to create lasting relationships with the faculty members through the training and coordination of the Student Conduct Hearing Officers Board consisting of faculty members from each school. She has developed meaningful partnerships with faculty and administration and, as a result, brings deep knowledge of how to successfully build infrastructure within the CSUB culture to her new position.
"We are very pleased at the addition of Roopa to our University Advancement team," said David Melendez, Vice President for University Advancement. "This is a role that is central to the very future of the university. As an alumna, Roopa brings perspective of, and understands the value in, being a CSUB student. She firmly grasps that alumni and community engagement are elemental in ensuring that the vision of our President, Dr. Mitchell, is realized. ”
In her new role, she will support the work of the Division of University Advancement by actively supporting the Alumni Association as well as the 60+ Club and will be essential in the future successes of hallmark events such as the Alumni Hall of Fame Gala and Party in the Park. Her charge will be to graduate the effectiveness of the Office of Alumni Relations by seeking input from vital stakeholders, including CSUB’s approximately 41,000-strong alumni base. She will work to engage alumni both off and on campus in a way that makes an exponential difference and marks a new era in alumni relations.
“I am excited to partner with Roopa because she understands not only community engagement or that the university is intertwined with local industry, but also that this connection can be expressed as service both to the university and the community," commented Jewelle Scales, President, CSUB Alumni Association Board.
“Alumni relations start while students are still on campus. It supports students in peer-to-peer contact, volunteerism opportunities in the community, and with career contacts. Roopa’s appointment reaffirms the ideal that alumni relations aren’t just about reunions anymore. This really is great news for all,” said David Loomis, President-Elect, CSUB Alumni Association Board.
Davé-Lakhani remarked, “I’m looking forward to being a resource for students and alumni who want to maintain a lifelong relationship with CSUB. As a current student myself, I am directly aware of their aspirations and challenges. I am committed to supporting not only my fellow students, but also advancing the opportunities of my fellow alumni and the greater community.”
Davé-Lakhani earned her Bachelor’s degree in her native Nairobi, Kenya in International Business Administration from United States International University (USIU). She earned her Master’s degree in Public Administration from CSUB in 2006. Additionally, she is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership through a joint collaboration between Fresno State University and CSUB and she is a proud member of the Pi Alpha Alpha Public Affairs and Administration National Honor Society.
