"Walter Presents" Series Brings Zen Buddhism To The Walter Stiern Library
November 13, 2012On November 15, Dr. Richard Collins, a Zen teacher, will be discussing Zen Buddhism and his recent book project, Mushotoku Mind: the Heart of the Heart Sutra by Taisen Deshimaru at the Walter Stiern Library at CSUB at 3 p.m.
Taisen Deshimaru was a Master who headed the Soto School of Zen Buddhism in Europe after migrating from Japan in 1967. Deshimaru's book is a commentary on the Heart Sutra, one of the most renowned Buddhist texts. It has been brought to life by Richard Collins, a practicing Buddhist. The term Mushotoku Mind can be translated as an attitude of "no profit, no gain." The discussion will focus, in part, on the concept of "emptiness" as a means of following the Zen path.
"We are thrilled to have Dr. Collins at the Walter Stiern Library presenting on Zen Buddhism. His knowledge of the subject is vast and this topic will surely make for an interesting and educational afternoon," said Curt Asher, Interim Dean, Walter Stiern Library.
Dr. Collins is a Zen teacher in the lineage of Taisen Deshimaru and Dean of Arts & Humanities at California State University, Bakersfield. Dr. Collins has held several research fellowships, including a Fulbright-Hays grant to London and a Fulbright Senior Lectureship in Romania. He has taught at the American University in Bulgaria, Louisiana State University, and Xavier University of Louisiana, where he was editor of the Xavier Review. He received monastic ordination from Robert Livingston Roshi. Collins also founded the Zen Fellowship of Bakersfield, which offers Zen meditation every Saturday morning at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Kern.
The talk is part of the Walter Presents Series. Walter Presents is a series in the Walter Stiern Library that brings interesting speakers, presenters, exhibits and events to the library. All Walter Presents Series events are open to the public and free of charge.
