CSU Bakersfield announces 2012 Alumni Hall of Fame recipients

Hall of fame LogoThe CSU Bakersfield Alumni Association will induct its sixth annual class of accomplished alumni into the Alumni Hall of Fame on Saturday, February 18, 2012 during a black-tie ceremony at the Petroleum Club.

"The CSUB Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 2006 as a way to acknowledge alumni who have made significant contributions in their chosen fields and in their community, and whose accomplishments bring honor and distinction to the university," said Carol Sherrill, CSUB alumna and chair of the Hall of Fame committee.

This year's three inductees are:

Nancy Chaffin — Chaffin received her bachelor's in Business Administration in 1991 from CSUB and served on the university's Alumni Board of Directors for 16 years in numerous capacities including president and treasurer. Chaffin is currently vice president of administration & operations at The Bakersfield Californian, where she has worked since 2002. Outside of her career, Chaffin is a tireless community servant and has served on boards and committees for numerous nonprofits including the Kern Adult Literacy Council, Court Appointed Special Advocates, and the Girls Scouts of Southern California. She has also been instrumental in A Life Interrupted, a community program that advocates safe and responsible driving practices to teens. Chaffin was the recipient of the California Women Lead's Women of Distinction Award in 2011, and has three Beautiful Bakersfield awards to her credit.

Bernard C. Barmann, Sr. — Barmann is the former County Counsel, Chief Civil Attorney, for the County of Kern, a post he held for 25 years before retiring in 2009. Born in Maryville, Missouri, he came to California in 1960 for graduate work at Stanford University on a National Defense Scholarship to study classical languages and literature. His undergraduate degree is from the Immaculate Conception College in Missouri. He also has a Ph.D. from Stanford University, a juris doctorate from the University of San Diego, and a master's in public administration from CSUB in 1987. He is currently serving on the boards of the Kern County Bar Foundation, Valley Public Radio, Rotary Club of Bakersfield, and the Kern County Academic Decathlon. Barmann has taught literature at Ohio State University, the University of Toronto, and as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Business and Public Administration at CSUB for 12 years. He was CSUB's commencement speaker in 2003. Since his retirement, Bermann has enjoyed doing pro bono legal work for nonprofits in the community, traveling, and golfing.

Jerry E. Scott — Scott is a three-time graduate of CSUB and the first in his family to graduate from college. He received his bachelor's degree in physical education with a minor in English in 1976, his master's in education in 1981 and his administrative credential in 1992. He also ran track under CSUB coach Charlie Craig. Scott and his brother moved to Wasco to live with their mother in 1967. Scott entered the Educational Opportunity Program at CSUB and after graduation went to work for Bakersfield City School District as an English teacher. He later served as athletic director and high school principal in Wasco. For the past 11 years, Scott has served as superintendent of the Lost Hills Union School District. Scott has served on numerous community boards including the Mendiburu Magic Foundation and Michael Stewart Foundation, and has amassed many community awards and recognitions including being inducted into the Kern County Official's Association Hall of Fame. He was recently featured in Bakersfield Life magazine's "People to know in Kern County."
