California Writers Series features Mona Simpson on May 10
May 02, 2011The California Writers Series at CSUB is featuring author Mona Simpson at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, in the Dezember Reading Room of the Walter Stiern Library.
Mona Simpson is a highly acclaimed writer and has written five successful novels. Her first, "Anywhere But Here," was made into a 1999 movie featuring Susan Sarandon as a mother who moves to California to make a star of her daughter, played by Natalie Portman. Her latest book, "My Hollywood," intertwines the lives of a young mother and her Filipina nanny. Simpson's work has been awarded several prizes: A Whiting Prize, A Guggenheim, a grant from the NEA, a Hodder Fellowship from Princeton University, a Lila Wallace Readers Digest Prize, a Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize, Pen Faulkner finalist, and most recently a Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for students and the larger community to hear a highly accomplished contemporary novelist read from her work and to discuss the creative writing process with her," said Marit MacArthur, CSUB English professor.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking in Lot D is $2. The author readings will be followed by a discussion and book signing. Book sales will be offered by Russo's Books.
The California Writers Series, begun in 2006, is sponsored by the Walter Stiern Library, Associated Students, Inc., the CSUB English Department and Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honors Society. Previous readers have included Kay Ryan (former U.S. Poet Laureate), Wanda Coleman, Joe Wenderoth, Susana Chavez-Silverman, Pam Houston, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Brian Turner, Aimee Phan, Frank Bidart, and Alex Espinoza.
