I'm experiencing some errors when logging into the program. How can I fix this?

A common fix for experiencing small errors is to first make sure you are using either Google Chrome or Mozilla FireFox, as Safari and Internet Explorer tend to have compatibility issues with the program. Next, you may need to clear your cache and cookies from your web browser. To clear your cache and cookies, follow these steps :

For Google Chrome:

  • Click the Chrome menu; it will look like three horizontal bars located next to the star on the upper right hand side, on the browser toolbar.

  • Select "More tools."

  • Select "Clear Browsing Data."

  • In the dialog that appears, select the checkboxes for the types of information that you want to remove.

  • Use the menu at the top to select the amount of data that you want to delete. Select "the beginning of time" from the top drop down menu to delete everything.

  • Click "Clear Browsing Data."

For Mozilla FireFox:

  • Click the Firefox menu; it will look like three horizontal bars located in the upper right hand corner, on the browser toolbar.

  • Click on "Options" in the menu that opens up.

  • In the bar on the left side of the new window select "Privacy," then select "Remove Individual Cookies."

  • Click the "Remove All" option, then close the window.

  • You may also need to close the entire browser then reopen it.

If the solutions above do not fix the problem, you may need to reset your password.

How do I master a topic?

The amount of work you complete in the program will vary depending on the requirements for your class and instructor, but the content of the program remains the same across the curriculum. You will be assigned specific topics to complete for your class. Each topic consists of 5 activities: the Overview, Animation, Recall 1, Recall 2, and the Apply. You will need to earn at least an 80% on each activity for the topic to be considered complete. You are given 10 attempts per activity, and failing to reach an 80% within those attempts will lock you out of the topic.

For information on the amount of work you are required for your class, please see your instructor for more details.

How do I know if I mastered a topic?

To master a topic, you must receive a score of 80% or higher on each activity within the topic. These include the Overview, Animation, Recall 1, Recall 2, and the Apply. Mastering a topic will be indicated with a gold star next to the topic.

I've exhausted all my attempts for my activity. How can I get more?

To get your activity unlocked, you will need to either fill out an Unlock Form or contact us with your information so that we can give you more attempts. You can contact us via email, phone, or by visiting our Headquarters located in Classroom Building Room 100. Click to fill out an Unlock Form here!

When sending us an unlock request via email, please provide your name, class section, instructor, and the topics that you need unlocked. Giving us partial information makes it difficult to find you in the program and may delay us from getting your activities unlocked.

What is Free Range?

Free Range allows you to work in MyWritingLabPlus even if you are not currently enrolled in a class that is using the program. You can use this to practice any of the topics within the program.

Any work completed in Free Range can only be seen by you. If you have topics you need to complete for a class, please select the link to your class section and complete the topics there. Any work done in Free Range will not count as completed work for your class.

I am enrolled in a class, but I do not see a link for it. What could be the problem?

First try clicking the sync button on the top right corner of the page (it looks like a refresh button). Your class section should appear.

If your course still does not appear, you may be a fee-waiver or Extended University student. The MyWritingLabsPlus fee is only included for tuition paying students.

If you are a fee-waiver student , you will have to pay the fee the cashier's office.

If you are an Extended University student, you will have to pay the fee at the Extended University office.

The fee is currently $17.25. Once you have paid the fee, please wait up to 24 hours for your class section to appear on your account.

How can I submit a paper for review?

Some courses require that you have your paper reviewed by a tutor. Using MyWritingLabPlus gives you access to Pearson Tutor Services, a feature of the program that allows you to submit papers (maximum length of 15 pages) on any subject and receive personalized feedback from a person with a Master's or PhD in that subject. The submitted papers come back in an average of 24-48 hours.

To access Pearson Tutor Services, you will first need to log into the MyWritingLabPlus program (see our response to the first FAQ above). After doing so, you will be taken to a home page with several links; click on the "Pearson Tutor Services - Smarthinking" link. Then click the "Enter" link within the course. A new window will pop up with the system requirements; select the "Click Here to Continue" button on the bottom left corner of the the page. To submit a paper, click on the "Submit My Writing" link on the homepage. Click the "Essay Center" button on the following page. From there, you should be taken to a submission form where you can upload your paper and include the necessary specifications for the tutor.

To retrieve your paper after submitting it, you can access the Pearson Tutor Services homepage by following the previous steps. Upon reaching the homepage, select "Review My Sessions and Submissions" (instead of Submit My Writing). On the following page, you should see a link to your paper in blue, where you can download the Tutor's response as well as the original copy of your paper.

For more information, please read through this helpful PowerPoint on Pearson Tutor Services.
