Music Facilities

The CSUB Music Program operates primarily out of the Music Building which is located near the north-west corner of the campus.  Use the Directions page for detailed directions to our primary facility.

Within the Music Building, we have rehearsal spaces for large ensembles, a suite of practice rooms, small seminar rooms, larger lecture rooms, and faculty office spaces.  The most widely used spaces within the Music Building are:

The Choir Room (MUS 127) is a rehearsal space and small recital space for student and visiting guest artist performances.  The room can support rehearsals with up to 80 singers and performances with up to 100 audience members.  The room houses a Yamaha C-5 grand piano.

The Band Room (MUS 128) is a rehearsal space for CSUB instrumental ensembles and houses a Steinway Concert grand piano, a full array of concert percussion, drum sets and amplifiers for electric guitars and basses used by the Jazz Program.

In addition to the Music Building, CSUB Music uses these other facilities:

The Doré Theatre, named after Frances B. Doré, can accommodate 495 patrons which includes room for wheelchair placement. The stage area is approximately 32 feet wide and 34 feet deep. It has a 48-foot proscenium and is equipped with a 24-line fly system and an orchestra pit on a hydraulic elevator. A black drape or a natural muslin sky drop are available for backdrops. There is a computerized lighting and sound system as well as an assistive listening system. In addition to serving as the primary venue for Theatre and Music Department events, the Doré is available for rental on selected dates by outside groups. For information contact Karen Mendenhall-Gregory at (661) 654-3093 or kmendenhall_gregory@csub.edu.

The CSUB Amphitheater is a large open-air venue that is used by the Department and University for a variety of events including Commencements and the Annual Bakersfield Jazz Festival.  It is also available for rental on selected dates by outside groups.  For information contact Karen Mendenhall-Gregory at (661) 654-3093 or kmendenhall_gregory@csub.edu.

The Keyboard Lab, located in Doré Theatre, room 114, is equipped with fifteen digital 88-key pianos which are used for Musicianship and Piano courses.

The MIDI Lab, located in Classroom Building, room 107, is equipped with twelve macintosh computers with MIDI keyboards and an array of software for music production and computer assisted notation.
