MISSION
AND CAPABILITIES STATEMENT
MISSION
The Museum of
Anthropology, Repository for Archaeological Collections (Repository) maintains
archaeological collections and associated records in order to foster research
and enhance education. California State University Bakersfield (CSUB) was chosen
as a repository site for several reasons: CSUB is centrally located in Kern
County, there is no other centrally located repository, the Repository can
facilitate applied research through the Center for Archaeological Research
(housed at CSUB), and the Repository can provide a location where CSUB students and
others may conduct research.
CAPABILITIES
1.

Repository
maintains complete and accurate records of the collections.
|
|
a.
|
All acquisition
records, descriptive information, photographs, negatives, slides, maps,
catalog lists, information on the location and the condition of
collections, and records of loans, deaccessions, transfers, exchanges, and
inventories are retained.
|
|
b.
|
Periodic inventory
and inspection of records are conducted.
|
|
c.
|
Records are
maintained on lost, damaged, or destroyed government property.
|
2.
|
Repository will
store records in such a manner as to protect them from theft and fire.
|
a.
|
Records are stored
in an insulated, fire resistant, locking cabinet.
|
b.
|
A duplicate set of
records is stored in a separate location.
|
3.
|
Facilities,
equipment, and space are adequate to effectively store and conserve
collections while making them available for study.
|
4.
|
Collections are
stored under physically secure conditions.
|
|
a.
|
Repository meets
local electrical, fire, building, health, and safety codes.
|
|
b.
|
Repository has an
appropriate and operational fire detection system and an
intrusion-detection and deterrent system linked to local police
department.
|
|
c.
|
Repository has
periodic pest control.
|
|
d.
|
Repository uses
standard storage boxes on seismically sound shelving structures.
|
|
e.
|
Repository provides
valuable items with additional security, (i.e., a safe, vault, or museum
specimen cabinet).
|
|
f.
|
Repository is
climate controlled but not humidity controlled; therefore, cannot accept
ethnographic collections.
|
|
g.
|
Repository provides
limited and controlled access.
|
|
h.
|
Repository is
inspected on a regular basis and necessary actions are taken to maintain
the integrity of the collections.
|
|
i.
|
Repository provides
space for collection analysis.
|
5.
|
Staff responsible
for caring for collections has the expertise appropriate to the particular
material remains and records to meet pertinent professional
qualifications.
|
6.
|
Materials and
records are protected from possible deterioration from adverse
temperature, relative humidity, visible light, ultraviolet radiation,
dust, gases, mold, fungus, insects, rodents, and general neglect.
|
7.
|
Periodic
inspections and inventories are conducted.
|
8.
|
Repository provides
collection access to researchers.
