MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to CSUB's Mathematics Department. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in mathematics with 5 possible concentrations, in addition to minors in mathematics and applied statistics. The 5 concentrations for the bachelor's degree are applied mathematics, economics, statistics, theoretical mathematics, and teaching mathematics, the latter including only the single subject matter preparation in mathematics, or a blended option which allows the student to graduate in 4 yeas with a B.S. in mathematics AND a single subject credential.
Faculty members in the department are recipients of 3 outstanding professor awards, 2 faculty research awards, and 1 leadership and service award, all university-wide. They serve in numerous agencies at every level from local to international.
One of the program's teaching goals is to help the students discover both the importance and beauty of mathematics by combining lectures with discussions, problem solving activities, student presentations, and computer experience.
A degree in mathematics opens the most varied kinds of doors. With the current economic situation, a BS in mathematics or even a minor in math, gives you the edge over other people seeking jobs. Salaries for mathematicians are substantially higher than average.
Upon completion of our major, students are prepared to pursue careers in teaching or industry and are ready for graduate study leading to advanced degrees. CSUB mathematics majors have gone on to graduate programs such as UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, Iowa State University, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to name the latest, and have been recipients of numerous distinctions in undergraduate research.
Please feel free to come by my office (SCI III Room 230) if you have any questions about our program, or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. In the meantime, please enjoy visiting the rest of our webpage or visit us in Facebook (Math CSUB).
All the best,
Javier Trigos-Arrieta , Chair
