MULTICULTURAL BROWSING AREA

The Multicultural Browsing Area of the Walter W. Stiern Library supports the diversity of the CSUB community and the community at large. Located in the Dezember Reading Room, the collection contains selected books, newspapers and periodicals dealing with the historical and contemporary experiences of ethnic and racial groups in the United States, particularly African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans.

PERIODICALS

The Library susbcribes to various periodicals related to and/or is of interest on multicultural topics. Issues are shelved in the main periodicals collection located on the Second Level of the Stiern Library. As noted, a few of these titles are on display in the Dezember Reading Room.

AKWESASNE NOTES (CURRENT ISSUE ON DISPLAY)
A news journal dedicated to reporting on the issues and concerns of Native Peoples.
AMERICAN VISIONS (CURRENT ISSUE ON DISPLAY)
Covers Black culture and history with features and reviews on the arts, politics, sports, and history.
AMERICAS
A beautifully illustrated magazine containing interesting, informative articles and news of the Americas.
ASIAN WEEK (CURRENT ISSUE ON DISPLAY)
Covers news of interest to Asian-Americans. It is the only Asian-American English-language weekly that circulates nationally.
BLACK COLLEGIAN
A career-oriented magazine whose emphasis is on the value of education.
BLACK ENTERPRISE (CURRENT ISSUE ON DISPLAY)
Focuses on business, jobs, career potential, and financial opportunities.
BLACK SCHOLAR
A scholarly journal empasizing issues confronting African-Americans, Africa, and the Diaspora.
EBONY(CURRENT ISSUE ON DISPLAY)
The most widely read African-American magazine, this magazine profiles general issues and the personalities of contemporary American-American life and history.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
Provides practical job-seeking advice and help for any person looking for employment. Also includes feature articles on those who have achieved success.
FEM
Advances progressive issues in Mexico on behalf of Mexican women. Offers a different perspective of issues facing Mexican women that generally are not published elsewhere. Written in Spanish.
HISPANIC(CURRENT ISSUE ON DISPLAY)
In an attempt to reach the English-speaking population of Latinos living in the U.S., it covers personalities and issues of general interest.
HISPANIC BUSINESS (CURRENT ISSUE ON DISPLAY)
Directed at Latinos as the emerging, consumer force in the U.S. Covers such business related topics as finance, investment, women in business and others.
HISPANIC TIMES
Features articles on a broad range of topics of inerest to college students--sports, health, travel, entertainment--as well as articles about Hispanic and Native American affairs.
MEXICALO
A bilingual newspaper covering various news events, particularly of interest to Kern County's Hispanic community.
MULTICULTURAL REVIEW (CURRENT ISSUE ON DISPLAY)
Provides "reviews of multicultural materials and information on the subject of muliculturalism".
NEWS FROM NATIVE CALIFORNIA
Features articles, written largely by Native American authors, on all aspects of life for California Indians today.
EL PAIS
A newspaper from Spain covering international news stories. Written in Spanish.

The complete holdings of what books and nonprint sources (e.g. compact discs, videocassettes and more) the Library has on various multicultural topics and subjects. When searching by subject it is best to consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings located at the Reference desk. For example, the Library of Congress in some instances does not use terms that are used by the general population, for example, African Americans, Chicanos, Native Americans, etc. If you need help in identifying the appropriate term, ask a Reference Librarian for assistance.
