Testing & Accountability

California Department of Education site with links to student and school performance data including:

Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR)
Administration of the STAR program. Test results are used for student and school accountability purposes.
Academic Performance Index (API)
Measures the academic performance and growth of schools on a variety of academic measures.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
Requires each state to ensure that all schools and districts make Adequate Yearly Progress based on assessments included in the statewide accountability system.
California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)
Beginning with the Class of 2006, all public school students will be required to pass the exam to earn a high school diploma.

Student Demographics

California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS)
An annual collection of basic student and staff data. Includes student enrollment, graduates, dropouts, course enrollment, enrollment in alternative education, gifted and talented education, and more.
California School Information Services (CSIS)
Contains information about the funded initiative to transfer student records electronically from participating school districts and to allow state reporting from electronic records.
Language Census (R30-LC)
An annual data collection on students with non-English backgrounds. Includes data pertaining to English Learners (EL) and Fluent-English Proficient (FEP) students and other related information.

Credential Standards:

Standards for Educator Preparation [California Commission on Teacher Credentialing]
The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing awards credentials and certificates on the basis of completion of programs that meet Standards for Educator Preparation and Standards for Educator Competence. For each type of professional credential in education, the Commission has developed and adopted standards which are based upon recent research and the expert advice of many professional educators. Each standard specifies a level of quality and effectiveness that the Commission requires from programs offering academic and professional preparation in education.

California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)
Web site established by the testing contractor, National Evaluation Systems, that includes the CBEST registration bulletin, information about registering for the CBEST via the Internet, ordering a CBEST registration bulletin, interpreting CBEST score information, changing or withdrawing your CBEST registration, accessing unofficial CBEST results, and communicating with the CBEST program by e-mail. The Web site also provides sample CBEST materials.

Eric Database
The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), produces a database of journal and non-journal education literature. The new ERIC online system, released September 2004, provides the public with a centralized ERIC Web site for searching the ERIC bibliographic database citations going back to 1966. Full-text non-journal documents are also available (issued 1993-2004), previously through fee-based services only, will be available for free.
