An introduction to the information resources available on the Internet for research purposes. Emphasis will be placed upon the identification, retrieval and evaluation of information for general and specific topics. Student will develop general knowledge of the Internet, navigation skills, effective search strategy skills, familiarity with Internet finding tools, evaluation methodologies and other Internet research skills.

Students will gain knowledge and skill in finding, collecting, and using economics and environmental resource management (ERM) information resources for courses and research. Class sessions will involve the introduction and review of major economic and ERM resources, data files, and databases accessible through the CSUB Library, government web sites, and other internet servers. Students will be assigned selected readings along with practical assignments involving the use of these resources.
GST 110 Library Research Skills Lab (1 Unit)
This course complements the ENGL 110 Writing and Research course. This five week course is designed to help students successfully meet their research requirement by teaching them the skills and concepts needed to conduct library research. The course is graded. Co-requisite: ENGL 110
This is an online class that will begin the fourth week of the quarter and meet for 5 weeks (ending on March 1st).There will be one required on campus meeting during week 5 of the quarter (I will have several dates and times for you to select from). GST 126 Researching the Electronic Library (2 Units)
An introduction to effective research techniques using Library electronic resources. Emphasis will be placed upon skills necessary for the identification, retrieval, and evaluation of information for general and specific topics. Students will acquire the competencies necessary to develop an effective search strategy and find research materials, including references to journal articles, full text articles in electronic format, government publications and books.

GST153-1 Internet Research (2 Units)
This course focuses on the internet’s major search tools, (e.g., Google, Bing, Dogpile, etc.) and key web research databases. Students will discover “hidden” search engine features that will improve search results and navigation of the internet. Emphasis is also placed on developing search skills ranging from simple keyword to more sophisticated strategies. Students will also develop key critical thinking skills to determine the trustworthiness of websites. This course is ideal for students who want to become successful at researching internet resources.
