Tracing the History of a Research Topic
1. Prepare a timeline that shows how an event or discovery has been reported at different times and in various types of sources. (example)
2. Track a research topic over a period of time. How and when did the topic originate? In the popular press? In the scholarly press? How did the topic progress through time? [Rutgers University]
3. Students update an older review article. Include a discussion on the research process used for the update.
4. Research a particular topic in the literature of the 70s and 80s, then research the same topic in the literature of the 90s and 2000s. Discuss the evolution of the topic based on this exercise.
