Extending J-1 Status
J-1 scholars/students, who are unable to complete their program of study prior to the completion date listed on the DS-2019, must apply to her/his Exchange Visitor/Students Program RO/ARO for a program extension PRIOR to the expiration date listed in item #3 of the DS-2019.
To request a Program Extension, a J-1 student should contact the RO/ARO of her/his Exchange Visitor Program two months before the authorized stay or DS-2019 expires. The extension must be processed prior to the expiration date of the previous DS-2019.
If your sponsor is CSUB, please following the instructions below to apply for an extension of your program:
You must apply to your J Exchange Visitor Program sponsor for a program extension PRIOR to expiration date on your DS-2019 (item #3).
Eligibility
- You must have continually maintained status.
- Extensions should be granted prior to the expiration date on the DS-2019, item #3
- Your extension must be within the original purpose of your program.
PROCEDURES
For J-1 Students/Scholars sponsored by the CSUB Exchange Visitor Programs,
Step 1: Ask your academic advisor to write a letter explaining the reasons for the extension request.
Step 3: Submit the following documents to the J-1 advisor
- Request for Program Extension
- Current Financial Statement
- Supporting financial documentation (i.e. bank statement, sponsor’s letter, etc.)
- Proof of medical insurance coverage for the period of the extension
Step 4: The responsible officer or alternate responsible officer will issue a new form DS-2019 for the period requested.
Step 5: You will be contacted by ISP to come to sign the DS-2019, a copy will be made for your file and the original will be given to you as a proof of your legal status.
