School of Education receives national accreditation

CSUB wants the community to know its teacher education program answers to a higher level of performance and rigor. In fact, it is the only nationally accredited program in the region.

At the state level the School of Education (SOE) was recently granted full accreditation from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, or CCTC, following its traditional seven-year review cycle.

In addition to the CCTC, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education visited the campus last spring as one of the final steps in the review process. The SOE spent two to three years in preparation for the five-day visit.

Preparation included working with the on-campus community and the community at large, developing ideal candidate descriptions, the reaffirming of the school’s mission, and writing an institutional report that contains the SOE conceptual framework. “It’s our conceptual framework that sets us apart,” said Curt Guaglianone, dean of the School of Education.

“The CCTC establishes a set of standards to which each credential program must adhere, and then demonstrate competency when the 22 member team arrives on campus for the visit. We met all of the standards,” Guaglianone said. “…With NCATE there is a higher level of accountability. In meeting their standards our graduates are highly competent, at a national level, and well prepared to become excellent teachers.”

During the spring visit NCATE recommended CSUB for full reaccreditation.
