The 2008-09 Alumni Association Board of Directors is already hard at work planning opportunities to connect alumni, students and friends of the university in support of CSUB and each other. Under the leadership of Mike Russo, the board looks forward to increasing membership and volunteer base for university activities.

The volunteer board helps to promote a sense of pride, excitement and loyalty for the university. New to the board this year are members Jennifer Blackwood, Christine Goedhart-Humphrey, Doug Greener, Adam Hopkins and David Perkins. The association heartily thanks retiring board members Renee Kinzel and Janet Millar for their many years of dedication.

Jim Burke

Jim Burke

James (Jim) Burke was named as CSUB's 2008 Alumni Advocate of the Year. Burke was honored posthumously at the CSU's Legislative Day.

A Kern County civic leader and philanthropist, Burke served as chairman of the Burke Automotive Group, guiding Jim Burke Ford in Bakersfield to become the third largest dealership in California with nearly 400 employees and sales in excess of $150 million.

Burke, a graduate of Stanford University, received his honorary doctorate degree from CSUB in 1997. Although Burke passed away in 2006, the CSUB Alumni Association voted unanimously to honor this advocate for education posthumously for his many years of support. For over 12 years prior to his death and continuing through this year, Burke Air has donated the use of a private plane and pilot to transport a group of local community and CSUB leaders to Sacramento for Legislative Day.

He served as a founding director and past chairman of the CSUB Foundation. He was a leading donor and a fundraising volunteer. Prior to becoming an alumnus, Burke was honored by CSUB as an Outstanding Friend of the University and Outstanding Friend of the School of Education.
