In the first nine months of 1996, crime in Bakersfield and Kern County dropped sharply, mirroring what Attorney General Dan Lungren called a "historic" reduction in crime throughout the State of California.
The Kern County Sheriff's Department retains a force of 550 officers. The Bakersfield Police Department employs 270 officers and utilizes 100 civic volunteers. Arvin, Delano, Ridgecrest, Shafter and Taft also have their own city police forces.
Kern County is protected by the Kern County Fire Department, the City of Bakersfield Fire Department, and other local fire agencies. The City of Bakersfield Fire Department has 12 substations with 170 firefighters and 20 volunteer reserves. The Kern County Fire Department has 46 substations and 110 firefighters.
