History Forum - Guest Speaker David Orique, University of Oregon
“The
Unheard Voice of Law from an Often Heard Text: A New Rendition of
Bartolomé de las Casas’ Brevísima Relación de la Destruición de
las Indias.” Of the many important historical figures of the
sixteenth century, few draw as much praise and, in some circles,
scorn as Bartolomé de las Casas (1484-1566), who was a formidable
advocate of human rights for the indigenous peoples of the New
World. David Orique will offer a fresh interpretation of the
Brevísima by articulating Las Casas’ previously unheard voice of
law that permeates this famous work and that passionately cried out
against the injustices of his time and still echoes with
contemporary significance. The lecture will be held on Friday,
September 19, at 3:30 p.m. in the Albertson Room (Doré Theater).
Refreshments will be served. Parking fees suspended in lots B
& C. This event is free; no registration required.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile
This
long running Off-Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein
and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the
renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity
and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In
his first comedy for the stage, popular actor and screenwriter
Steve Martin plays fast and loose with fact, fame, and fortune as
the two geniuses muse on the century's achievements and prospects,
as well as other fanciful topics with infectious dizziness.
Bystanders, including Picasso' agent, the bartender and his
mistress, Picasso's date, an elderly philosopher, Charles Dabernow
Schmendimen, and an idiot inventor, introduce additional flourishes
of humor. The final surprise patron to join the merriment at the
Lapin Agile is a charismatic dark haired singer time warped in from
a later era.
The play will run
November 6th thru 9th in the Doré Theatre.
Performance times TBA.
