Paper and/or Poster Presentations

  1. Regional National Honors Conference - Reno, Nevada- Western Regional Honors Council 42nd Annual Conference - Dr. Jacquelyn Kegley, Director of the CSUB Helen Hawk Honors Program and Omar Samara, Engineering major and Hawk Honors student attended the 42nd Annual Western Regional Honors Conference in Reno, Nevada April 10-12, 2014 hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno.  43 universities were represented and 332 registrants attended.  There were 130 student presentations and 36 poster sessions.  Omar Samara presented a poster entitled “System for Pest Bird Control in Specialty Crops Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.”  Next year’s Western Regional Conference will be held at University of California, Riverside.

  1. CSU Honors Consortium Honors Conference- CSU, Chico -  May 1st and 2, 2015
    1. Three paper presentations:

                                                            i.      “Divine Kingship: The Process, the Pinnacle, and the Product: A Historiographical Analysis of King Arthur and his Impact on Western Culture”- Beth Lewis, History major

                                                            ii.      “The Society of Friends and the End of Slavery,” - Mackenzie Hopper, English major

                                                            iii.      “Development of a Low Cost, Autonomous, Sensor Based Irrigation System-Omar Samara - submitted and accepted but unable to attend.

  1. Alpha Chi Honors Society National Convention- Chicago, Illinois, The theme of the Conference was “The Nexus of Science and the Arts.” Chapter delegates from universities across the nation attended and over 300 students gave poster or paper presentations.  Alpha Chi always has a service sponsored project each year and this year the project was “Art Therapy Connection, Chicago- a program for at-risk youth.  Over $3000 in art supplies and donations of $2800 were given by the chapters.The key note speaker was Nnedi Okorafor, award-winning novelist of African-based science fiction, fantasy, and magical realism for children and adults.  The chapter got to talk with her and even get pictures.  Okorafor is Nigerian and this Nikki Oragwam was especially thrilled to meet this wonderful women.  Nnedi was an award winning athlete who was suddenly stricken with Scoliosis and after surgery was paralyzed.  She worked hard to recover from this with a determination honed as an athlete.

      Dr. Jacquelyn Kegley, Sponsor for California Iota Chapter served as a judged for 6 sessions of papers on Religion and Philosophy.
