The US-UK Fulbright Commission announces significant increase in awards.
At a ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Fulbright Treaty at the House of Commons on 22 September 2008, the US-UK Fulbright Commission announced the first wave of new awards that will increase by 30 percent of the number of scholarships it gives by 2010 to over 60. Florida State University offers Doctoral Fellowships on French Revolutionary/ Napoleonic History
Students who apply for doctoral study at the Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution at Florida State University are eligible to receive Ben Weider Graduate Student Fellowships. Fellowships offer full tuition waivers and $10,000 stipends annually. The Fellowships may be renewed each year throughout the course of your graduate studies. (Click here for more.)

Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program Deadline: March 3, 2009
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History welcomes applications from sophomore and junior History and American Studies majors for the 2009 summer program. History Scholars receive a stipend of $2,200, along with room, board, and a $600 travel allowance for a five-week program in New York City. Scholars conduct primary-source research to prepare historical materials for publication. Students receive an opportunity to work with original documents in the Gilder Lehrman Collection and other archives. The students also have exclusive meetings with eminent historians to discuss historical issues and gain insight into history as a profession. (For more, click here).

Teach for America deadline: 7 November 2008
Teach For America is a national corps of outstanding recent college graduates and working professionals - of all academic majors, backgrounds and career interests - who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders for expanding educational opportunity for all children. We seek outstanding individuals who possess the leadership skills and experience that will enable them to change the prospects of students growing up today and, ultimately, to effect the fundamental change in our society that will make it a place of opportunity for all. Fourth Annual Whitsett Graduate Seminar in California History
Deadline: Jan. 20, 2009
The one-day seminar will showcase the strongest graduate work on topics in California Moderated by top scholars in fields related to California History, the Seminar will convene on March 20, 2008. Submissions from graduate students at any stage of completion of the doctorate (including MA students) and those with PhDs still seeking full-time employment.

The best papers will receive special consideration for publication in California History, the quarterly journal of the California Historical Society, and Southern California Quarterly, the journal of the Historical Society of Southern California. (For more, click here.)

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Deadline: April 7, 2009
This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding and want to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The Gilman Program is now accepting applications for Fall 2009 programs. Over 1,200 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. (Click here for more.)

Graduate Student History Conference on Power and Struggle
Deadline: Nov. 15, 2008
Department of History of The University of Alabama is pleased to announce its First Annual Graduate Student History Conference on Power and Struggle, to be held March 6-7, 2009. We invite graduate students nationwide to submit proposals that engage the conference theme by examining power relations in all historical field and time periods. We also welcome submissions from exceptional undergraduate students for a Phi Alpha Theta panel. Click here for more information.

Wolfsonian-FIU Fellowship Program
App. deadline Dec 31, 2008
The Wolfsonian-Florida International University is a museum and research center that promotes the examination of modern visual and material culture. Fellowships are intended to support full-time research, generally for a period of three to five weeks. The program is open to holders of master's or doctoral degrees, Ph.D. candidates, and to others who have a significant record of professional achievement in relevant fields. for residency during the 2009-2011 academic years. Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest 2009. Deadline: December 19, 2008
The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to challenge college students to analyze the urgent ethical issues confronting them in today's complex world. Students are encouraged to write thought-provoking personal essays that raise questions, single out issues and are rational arguments for ethical action. Full-time undergraduate juniors and seniors are welcome to enter the Essay Contest. First Prize is $5000. (Click here for more.)

Capital Fellows Programs Deadline: February 25, 2009
These nationally recognized programs include 18 Assembly Fellows, 18 Senate Fellows, 18 Executive Fellows and 10 Judicial Administration Fellows, who receive an outstanding opportunity to engage in public service and prepare for future careers, while actively contributing to the development and implementation of public policy in California. Fellows work for 11 months, receive health benefits and a monthly stipend of $1972 and are considered employees of Sacramento State. They work as full-time members of a legislative, executive, or judicial branch office. Anyone with a degree from a four-year college or university is eligible to apply. (Click here for more.)

2009 Pacific Branch American Historical Association annual meeting in Albuquerque, NM; Deadline: Jan. 16, 2009
The PB-AHA invites proposals for panels and papers on all historical themes and time periods but with special consideration for those that fit with the theme, “Creating and Crossing Borders: Conquest, States, Peoples, Families.” Interdisciplinary panels and panels in non-traditional formats (films, posters, roundtables, etc.) are welcomed, as are panels composed of or including graduate students. Submit your short story to the Mitchelstown International Short Story Competition
The organising committee of the above competition is pleased to announce that entries are now being accepted for the 2008 Short Story Competition.

Friends of the Princeton University Library Research Grant Program
These grants have a value of up to $2,500 each and are meant to help defray expenses incurred in traveling to and residing in Princeton during the tenure of the grant. The length of the grant depends on the applicant's research proposal, but is ordinarily one month. Library Research Grants awarded in this academic year are tenable from May 2009 to April 2010.
