The image is of one of the huge Olmec heads at La Venta, a pre-Columbian archeological site in the Mexican state of Tabasco. It is nearly 3 metres (9 ft) tall and was carved from a single chunk of volcanic basalt. The Olmec flourished in Mesoamerica from 1400 to 400 B.C.E. and were one of the formative civilizations of the region.
