Phi Alpha Theta News

Four of our student members of Phi Alpha Theta and two faculty spent Saturday, May 12, at CSU Northridge for the annual Southern California PAT regional paper conference.  Our students made excellent presentations, and Christopher Mickols carried away an honorable mention, one of three graduate student awards.

The annual member banquet took place at Ching Yen restaurant on Saturday, April 28. Fourteen students were initiated as new members (see list below). We also heard presentations from our 2007 JR Wonderly Award Winners: Sharon Gillison (undergrad) and Christopher Mickols (grad).

Congratulations to our newest members:  Christopher Avis, Bethany Bradley, Rick Dodd, Cheryl Ellis, Robert Lane, Scott Mawson, Ryan McAmis, Christopher Mickols, Madeline Newberry, Rachel Richardson, Kevin Rizer, Justin Roberts, Adam Troxel, and Ryan Young.

A new board of officers is set for next year.  Please join me in congratulating the following members on their new positions:

President: Daniel Tierney; Vice-President: Justin Roberts; Secretary/Treasurer: Steve Allen; Historian: Ryan McAmis; Paper Award: Peter Wonderly; Banquet Coordinator: Bethany Bradley. Thanks for agreeing to serve! Thanks, too, to the officers for 2006-2007; I greatly appreciate your service to our chapter.

The perfect preparation for the annual regional conference is our own local, chapter paper competition. This competition for one of the JR Wonderly Memorial Awards will be in January 2008; applications will be mailed out to members sometime in December. If you wrote a research paper this past winter or spring quarter (e.g., for HIST 300 or 490 or any other history course with a research paper), or will be writing one in the fall (especially for HIST 300 or 490), please consider submitting it by January 18, 2008, to our 14^th annual paper competition; you are welcome to revise the paper as much as you like.  You, too, could win one of the J.R. Wonderly (cash) Awards!

Finally, I am seeking annual gifts from Phi Alpha Theta alumni in order to help a select few outstanding Phi Alpha Theta members fund their undergraduate education or further their education as graduate students. Scholarship donations are not only tax deductible, but the President may match such gifts with his own funds.
