Notes from the Social Science Coordinator

Infrequently offered courses:

For various reasons, including current budgetary constraints, some courses that satisfy requirements in the Social Science program are offered infrequently. Plan your schedules accordingly. A tentative schedule of Social Sciences courses is available in the History department office or from me (FT 301-E).

InSt 390, The Educator as Social Scientist: This course is scheduled to be offered only once this academic year – Winter 2007, Tuesday 8:00-10:25 pm.

Gender Perspectives: Anth 438: Anthropology of Women, and History 462: History of Women will be offered Winter 2007 in the F and K time blocks respectively. There are no courses scheduled for Spring 2007.

International Comparative Economics: EEGS 440: International Economics is scheduled for the winter term (I time block), and PlSci 404: The Politics of International Economics is scheduled for the spring term (N time block).

International Relations/Comparative Government: PlSci 304: International Relations and PlSci 404: The Politics of International Commerce are scheduled for Spring 2007 in the L and N time blocks respectively.

Please note that you may not use PlSci 404 to fulfill requirements in two different categories.

Certification of Subject Matter Competency:
To be certified as subject matter competent in Social Science one must have completed all 18 requirements in the Social Science Subject Matter Program with a minimum 2.7 grade point average in all courses taken for the program. Only courses in which you earn a C- or higher will be accepted as satisfying Social Science requirements.

80% completion policy:
Several local credential programs, including CSUB’s, allow students to begin certain phases of their credential work when 80% of the subject matter program has been completed. To secure certification of 80% completion in Social Science, students must have completed 15 courses, including all courses in the required core, with a grade of C- or better, and must have earned a minimum grade point average of 2.7 in all courses taken for the Social Science program.

CSET (California Subject Matter Examination for Teachers):
Certification may also be obtained by passing all sections of the CSET in Social Science. The Kern High School District plans to offer review courses to those planning on taking the examinations. The cost of the course is $40. Contact Katie Kleier at the KHSD office.

You are strongly urged to meet with an advisor each quarter to discuss your progress toward completion of the program and to plan your schedule.
