Announcements

Due to severe budget cuts, our department’s search for a new Latin American historian was cancelled. We therefore expect to have very limited offerings in this field this year and next. We are fortunate that Robert Torres, a faculty member at Bakersfield College, is able to teach an upper-division course in Latin American history (HIST 340) in the winter quarter (TR 10:30am-12:55pm, in ITV Studio A).

Please keep this in mind when you plan your schedule, especially if you are anticipating graduating this year or next fall, as all majors are required to take two upper-division non-western courses in two of these three areas: Africa, Asia, Latin America. We routinely offer an upper-division Asian history course each quarter (and there are TWO Asian options in winter, one more in spring), but History of Southern Africa is generally offered only once a year, and that was this last quarter. To aid students seeking a non-western course, however, Dr. Meriwether will teach his HIST 481 again during the spring term. Please plan accordingly, and visit the course schedule on the back of this newsletter for guidance.
