The
High School Equivalency Program through California State University,
Bakersfield consists of six-weeks of intensive study, designed to meet
the educational needs of out-of-school migrant and seasonal farmworkers,
by providing them with a University atmosphere. The classroom sites
are located at CSU, Bakersfield and ran from June 24 - August 2.
The
CSUB-HEP Summer Residential program provides students with a University
ambiance, which will give them the confidence to proceed their GED education
with a higher education. Students are provided with cultural field-trips,
educational presentations, meals, housing, and childcare for children
ages 2 - 5.
Our
first Summer Residential Program was a great success with a total of
10 participating students. The classes were held on
campus and started at 9:00 am, and ended at 4:00 pm, The students were
housed in the Campus dorms and meals were provided for them at the university
dining commons. Our HEP students experienced a true college "campus"
atmosphere.
"From
the first day of class I knew this was going to be an unbelievable and
very helpful experience. I believe in sacrificing my job for this (HEP
Summer Residential) it was well worth it" - Jaime Diaz
"The facilities at the university are good, the dormitories,
the parking and the food. What I like the most and really embellished
the place are the people I have become involved with, including my roommates"
- Sandra García
