Hiking in the Woods? Watch out for ticks that might be carriers of Lyme disease or other tick-borne illnesses. If possible, avoid tick infested areas. Stick to the center of trails and out of the grass or brush that might contain ticks. Wear clothing that fits tightly around the ankles and wrists. Spray your clothing with the insecticide permethrin, or use an insect repellent that contains DEET. Check yourself and family daily for ticks. Dont forget the dog. Remove any ticks carefully with tweezers taking care not to squeeze the ticks body. Apply antiseptic. A tick must be attached for 48 hours to transmit the Lyme bacterium so daily tick checks can prevent the disease. If you are going to areas where Lyme Disease is a high risk there is a new vaccine available that is 78% effective after three doses. Let the SHS know if you would like to order the vaccine.
