Dr. Dirk Baron, Director of Graduate Student Center Background: Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering, Oregon Graduate Institute, 1996
Professor of Geology and Project Director, CSUB Title V Part B Grant
Dr. Baron's expertise is in Environmental Geochemistry and Groundwater Hydrology. Research Interests: His current research is on the sources and distribution of arsenic in groundwater in
California’s San Joaquin Valley and on the geochemical characterization of geologic materials for
stratigraphic, environmental, and archaeological studies. He also has a long-standing interest in
science education and working with K-12 schools and is currently the principal investigator for a grant
from the National Science Foundation’s Math and Science Partnership program. dbaron@csub.edu

Dr. Penelope Swenson, Social Sciences & Education
Professor, Advanced Education Department: Educational Administration, Curriculum and Instruction (Program Coordinator) Background: Ph.D., Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA 1997 Research Interests:My research generally is in the areas of teaching, learning, educational leadership,
and instructional/educational technology. Currently, within these areas, I am conducting research on the influence of technology and the role of disruptive innovation.
I also work in ethics, leadership, online curriculum development, and school improvement. I have an ongoing research project focused on Col. Allen Allensworth. pswenson@csub.edu

Dr. Staci Loewy, Assistant Professor of Geology
Natural Science & Mathematics Background:PhD Geologial Sciences University of Texas at Austin, 2002. Research Interests:Dr. Loewy is interested in how continents have moved over the surface of the earth and how periodically they all seem to collide to form a supercontinent, like Pangea.
Her research uses geochemistry, structural geology and the study of ignous and metamorphic rocks to try to reconstruct ancient supercontinents.
Recently, she has become involved in studying the intrustion of igneous rocks in the Sierra Nevada. She is also extremely interessted in K-12 science education.
She currently secured a grant from the National Science Foundation to work with teachers to enhance the Earch Science curriculum. sloewy@csub.edu

Dr. Robert Carlisle, Arts & Humanities
Robert S. Carlisle, Professor of Applied Linguistics Background: Ph.D, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Research Interests: Dr. Carlisle has training in second language acquisition,
the acquisition of writing by native and non-native English speakers, and sociolinguistics with special emphasis in bilingualism,
bilingual education and language variation. His primary research interests are in interlanguage phonology,
the role of language universals in language acquisition and the effectiveness of on-line education.
He has published in journals such as Applied Linguistics, the International Journal of English Studies,
Language Learning, and Studies in Second Language Acquisition.
He has been coordinator of the Graduate Program in English since Spring 2000. rcarlisle@csub.edu
