Master's Program: English  Term/Year graduated: Fall 2013

How/why did you choose your respective program?

I chose to enter the English Master's program at CSUB because I wanted the opportunity to increase my writing skills. I am a teacher and a writer by profession.

Did you work first or go straight into the program after your undergraduate studies?

I worked first as a substitute teacher with my first degree in Criminology. Then I went back for my English degree to teach full-time. In 2011, I returned to earn my master's degree in English after both my children were adults. It had been a dream of mine for a longtime, and I am very excited that I am finally graduating this fall.

What is your favorite course(s) and why? .

My favorite course was Ethnic Studies with Monica Ayuso. She later became my mentor and reader of my Master's thesis project and my collaborative initiative grant proposal.  My research was in the area of  cultural and political trauma as it relates to the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.

What are some of the benefits of pursuing a master's degree?

First of all, the most important benefit of pursuing a master's degree is that it broadens your knowledge, and it gives you  amore well-rounded view of the world. Secondly, pursuing a master's degree opens the door for different types of work that may be more rewarding, and finally, pursuing a master's degree allows you to make life-long friends.

Will your graduate program prepare you for your current orfuture position?

Yes. The English Graduate Program at CSUB will help me tobe a better teacher of English at the junior college level,, and it will help me to be a better writer as well.

What are the benefits of attending CSUB for your master's degree?

The benefits of attending CSUB are that the school hires some of the most talented and passionate teachers. The classes are relatively smaller than UC campus classes, and the teachers are willing to work with you.
