Masters of Science in Biology


Thank you for your interest in our new Biology graduate program. A wide range of faculty expertise and research interests enables the department to offer a curriculum that spans the fields of microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, behavior, morphology, taxonomy, systematics and evolution.

Characteristics of the Program

  • Graduates with an M.S. in Biology will be prepared to continue study at the Ph.D. level, to pursue careers in private industry or government labs, and/or to teach at the community college level.
  • We offer both the thesis (research-based) and non-thesis (courseworkbased) option for the M.S. degree in Biology.

When to Apply


Fall admission: March 15

Winter admission: September 15

Spring admission: January 15

Admission Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in biological or related sciences.
  • An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 90 quarter (60 semester) units of course work.
  • A completed university application form via csumentor (www.csumentor.edu)
  • TOEFL scores (international applicants only).
  • Three letter of recommendations.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  • Graduate Records Examination (GRE) scores of 1000 or greater (verbal and quantitative).
