Masters of Arts in Anthropology


The Master of Arts in Anthropology is designed to provide graduate students with a thorough theoretical and methodological grounding in Anthropology that is essential for attaining a basic nonjudgmental understanding and appreciation of the diversity of other cultures, both past and present.

Characteristics of the Program

  • Graduates with an M.A. in Anthropology will be prepared to continue study at the Ph.D. level.
  • Career advancement in the private or public sector, or to teach at the community college level.
  • The program offers three graduate options or “tracks”: Thesis, Teaching, and a Special Project Options.

When to Apply


Fall admission: July 1

Winter admission: November 1

Spring admission: February 1

Admission Requirements

  • Have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • GPA of 2.5 overall and 3.0 in the major.
  • A completed university application form via csumentor (www.csumentor.edu)
  • A satisfactory TOEFL score (minimum of 550 or213 on the new conversion scale for International Students). Note: a student may petition minimum score requirements.
  • Formal letter of intent.
  • Three letter of recommendations.
  • Example of writing ability (published paper, conference paper, term paper, etc.)
  • GRE test scores, 1400 combined score in the three areas on the GRE test, with no less than 450 in any one test area.
  • GWAR or Engl 310 or equivalent from another university.
