Repeat Coursework

Federal student aid regulations limit the number of times an undergraduate, 2nd Bachelor's, and/or post-baccalaureate Teacher Credential student may repeat a course and receive financial aid for that course. These regulations do not apply to students in a master's or doctorate program.

  • A student may receive aid when repeating a course that was previously failed (received an F or NC), regardless of the number of times the course was attempted and failed, as long as the student has never passed the course previously. Once the student passes the course, they may repeat the course only one more time with aid (regardless of the repeat outcome -- including grades of F, NC, W, I, etc)
  • If a student retakes a course that is not aid eligible, a recalculation of aid will be done to exclude the credits for the repeated course (this may result in a change to their award and the student being required to return financial aid funds already disbursed).
  • If a student drops from all of their aid-eligible courses, and is only registered in non-eligible repeat courses, a Financial Aid Withdrawal Calculation must be completed.
  • If a student is enrolled in a recurring course that uses the same course number, but not the same course content (such as Orchestra), this course would not be considered to be retaking coursework.
  • The Repeat Coursework rule applies whether or not the student received aid for earlier enrollments in the course.
  • This regulation only affects eligibility for federal student aid programs (e.g., Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, Teach Grant, Perkins Loan, Direct Loans). It does not impact state aid programs (e.g., Cal Grant, EOP Grant, State University Grant, Chafee Grant, etc.) or Institutional awards (e.g., scholarships, athletic grant-in-aid, etc.).
  • There are no exceptions to this regulation, and therefore no petition process.
