Summer Aid

At CSUB, the summer term is treated (for financial aid purposes) as the last term in an academic year.

Eligibility Requirements

Students interested in receiving aid for the summer term must:

  • Have a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file for the corresponding academic year [CSUB treats the summer term as a trailer term (i.e., last term) to the academic year]
  • Have remaining annual aid eligibility
  • Submit all required financial aid documents
  • For student loan eligibility, be enrolled at least half-time:
    - Undergraduates & Teacher Credential Students: 6 credit hours
    - Master's & Doctorate Students (enrolled in 500 level coursework or higher): 3 credit hours

Financial aid for the summer term is limited, based on available funds and the student's remaining aid eligibility for the academic year. Eligibility for Pell Grant, State University Grant, and Subsidized/Unsubsidized/Grad PLUS loans will be automatically determined and awarded by the Financial Aid Office based on a student's summer enrollment. However, Parent PLUS loans and Private Alternative loans must be requested by the student.

Pell Grant eligibility

Students are limited to one scheduled Pell Grant award for the academic year (excluding summer). Because CSUB treats summer as a trailer term (i.e., last term to the academic year), students interested in receiving a Pell Grant during the summer will likely have no remaining Pell Grant eligibility if they have already received a full award during the fall and spring terms. However, if a student has enrolled less than full-time in any term during the year, they may have some remaining eligibility in summer.

State University Grant (SUG) eligibility

SUG may be awarded to eligible students who are attending summer courses and paying State University Fees. Courses through Extended University are not eligible. Determination of eligibility will be made after Census Day for the summer term and are based on student eligibility and available funds.

Loan eligibility

Students are limited to the amount of federal student loans they can borrow within an academic year based on their Cost of Attendance and annual loan limits by grade level. Eligibility for Federal Subsidized, Unsubsidized, and/or Grad PLUS loans will be automatically determined and awarded by the Financial Aid Office based on a student's summer enrollment. If a student has already borrowed their maximum federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized student loans for the academic year, their summer aid eligibility may be limited to borrowing a Parent PLUS Loan or Alternative Student Loan. Please consult with one of our Financial Aid Advisors if you are interested in a Parent PLUS or Alternative Student Loan.

Changes to your eligibility

Changes in enrolled credit hours, including course cancellation or withdrawal from summer classes, may result in changes to your aid. You may lose eligibility for aid you've already received, requiring you to return funds to the University. Please refer to our Census Day Repackaging policy for more information.
