Students may be eligible to receive up to $5,000 per year if they are enrolled in an eligible program. Funding is intended to supplement, not supplant, any grant funds that a student may otherwise be entitled to receive, nor may the total grant funding exceed the student’s cost of attendance.

The Chafee Foster Youth Grant Application is available on the Commission’s Web site at https://www.chafee.csac.ca.gov/default.asp. Only new Chafee applicants need to complete this application. Prospective Chafee students who cannot access the online application can download a paper application and mail or fax it to the Commission.

Renewal Chafee recipients must file a cooresponding FAFSA and CSUB must submit a (Need Analysis Report) NAR by the deadline, in order for the student to be considered for the renewal award process.

Chafee Grant Program benefits must be coordinated with the applicant’s other resources. The Financial Need Analysis Report will assist the Commission in determining the remaining financial need of the student. Remaining loan disbursements or work-study awards may be cancelled to allow maximum Chafee Grant awards prior to completing the Report.

The Commission's Customer Service staff can be reached at (888)224-7268 #1 for general inquiries. For more information on the Chafee Grant Program and its benefits, please check the following web sites: http://www.chafee.csac.ca.qov, http://www.csac.ca.gov, or https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov

Determining Student's Eligibility for the ACG

The U. S. Department of Education (USDE) uses the information collected on the FAFSA to identify potentially eligible students and notifies the university.  The CSUB Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships (OFA&S) will work with the CSUB Office of Admissions to confirm that the student completed a rigorous high school program.

    • Students do not need to contact the Office of Admissions or the OFA&S.
    • Confirmation of eligibility will be performed automatically.

The CSUB OFA&S will then utilize information provided by the Office of the Records, and the Office of Admissions to determine if a student meets the requirements for either a 1 st Year ACG or 2 nd Year ACG.

    Estimated Time of ACG Award
ACG award eligibility will be verified after Census Day for each term. Disbursement requires the student to be enrolled full-time (12 or more units).

    Awarding of ACG
ACG-eligible students who have already received their financial aid for the term will have their aid packages adjusted to reflect their eligibility for this new federal grant.

The law states that the ACG, in combination with the student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC), financial aid, and other resources, cannot exceed the student's Cost of Education.  Therefore, in some cases, the ACG may replace other financial aid , especially student and parent loan eligibility.  Students will be notified of the new award and any adjustment to other aid by CSUB RunnerMail.

•  This will happen automatically.  Students do not need to take any action.

Estimated Time of SMART Grant Award

The USDE continues to develop regulations and guidance about this new grant program, so we do not expect to make awards and notify eligible students until after Census Day each term.

Awarding of SMART Grant

SMART Grant-eligible students who have already received their financial aid for the term will have their aid packages adjusted to reflect their eligibility for this new federal grant.

The law states that the SMART Grant, in combination with the student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC), financial aid, and other resources, cannot exceed the student's Cost of Education.  Therefore, in some cases, the SMART Grant may replace other financial aid , especially student and parent loan eligibility.  Students will be notified of the new award and any adjustment to other aid by CSUB RunnerMail.
